I am not a rock hound - I don't know much of anything about rocks, but my husband and I camp a lot and have often found interesting rocks we wished we could identify. THIS IS A GREAT LITTLE BOOK! It has a picture on every page, and explanation of how to test for rock hardness (one of the ways to identifying a rock) and other sections about geologic formations (my favorite part and I am often fascinated by a landscape and wish I knew how it came about.The book is small, sturdy, really a treat to look at. It will go in our camping and hiking gear along with our bird and plant books.Lovely.

Nice format and interesting information on rocks and minerals. I'm new to the world of rocks and minerals so the detailed information about the formations of minerals and where they are found in North America was fascinating to read.

Yes, it's a pocket guide, but it's just too small and thin to cover anything but the smallest fraction of varieties and only those in the most superficial detail. I found it to be of almost no use. The much better option: Simon & Schuster's Guide to Rocks and Minerals. Many more photos and detailed descriptions. It's thicker but doesn't take up much more space.

Beautiful examples that are helpful in identifying what we find on hikes in our area and other adventures--will be useful for many trips in years to come.

This is a great book and almost fits into a pocket. It has many explanations and photos of minerals and rocks. My son and I carry it along when out on the banks of the Mississippi to help identify and aid us in rockery.

This is probably the best book I could ever hope to find for my 4 year old. There are several lessons for each letter, a good variety, and extra activities also such as connect the dots, match the pictures, etc. Thick awesome book with quality pages. Would highly recommend.

I love all of these, and so does my daughter, she really has fun and asks every evening to do her homework:) and they are BIG! you get a lot for what you pay for. I also love the kumon books, but those are pricier, especially the cutting ones where you can't put a clear page for them to write on with a dry erase so they can do the same pages over.

So great for age 3 to 4. This is like a homeschool preschool book to get you started! I just loved it! So much I bought 3 more for all my kiddos!

MY son loves this book. It is pretty easy for a 3yo to understand it when i read him the instructions. The pages are filled with colors and beautiful images!

HOLY COW this book is perfect. It's HUGE, so I use it more for at home reference, but it'd be a great book to keep in your clinic as well! I'm still relatively new to the veterinary world, so having this book is an amazing tool. Nearly 1000 pages, and everything you could possibly need to know for a tech! The ONLY complaint I have is that the orientation is awkward for such a large, paperback book. But it's not enough to knock off a star rating. I also love that it includes invaluable online resources!

Bought this book for my wife and she loves it. She's going to vet tech school online and is working for a County Animal Services training to be a vet tech and this book helps her all the time.

I bought this product a while ago. I still own it. I had to buy it for my class for reading assignment. This book is well organized. Although I had to get it for my school. I really loved the book. It was not boring to read. Most people buy this book because they have to for class, but its a great resource. I use it now as a review for my VTNE. I checked out this collection from the library numerous times before I finally looked for a copy for myself. In high school I only knew a couple composers/songwriters, and Gershwin was my favorite. After majoring in music, he is still my favorite. --Satisfying, accessible accompaniments.

Good collection -- great selection of songs in singable keys. The accompaniments are not difficult but are harder than beginner level.

This one gets to four stars because it's the only collection with the finale to Porgy & Bess, "Oh Lawd I'm On My Way," in Piano / Vocal format with chords. Believe it or not, author Dave Cullen did not set out to be the nation's leading "talking head" about school massacres. But he did such a brilliant job with his COLUMBINE regarding the mass murder in a Colorado high school that he was prevailed upon to write this PARKLAND when a similarly horrific, but somewhat different turn of events, killed so many teens in a middle-class Florida high school in 2018.The good news is -- Cullen is up to his usual standards. The even better news is that he faithfully reports the actions of Margery Stoneman Douglas High School survivors, the students and others who took the killings as a tripwire, not just one more dispiriting atrocity. The notion that "they're mad as hell and not going to take it anymore" holds well here.Now, to do this Cullen has to inject himself into this narrative to a somewhat larger extent than in COLUMBINE. Nonetheless I wish this well crafted book all the best, and look forward to Cullen's next book, SOLDIERS FIRST, whose publication was postponed into next year to allow for the writing, editing and publication of PARKLAND. Hard to believe that Cullen researched, wrote, and published it in the space of only one year -- but he did.

I expected so much more from this book about such an important event in recent history. I loved learning about the kids who drove the grassroots efforts following the Parkland shooting. However, the author took us on so many superfluous tangents along the way, that I feel the depth of true story gets lost. Yes, I cried, and yes I got angry reading this-there are parts of the book that make you ache. But overall, I feel the story could have been cleaner and more focused.

Started this on Friday, 2/15/19,, and finished it two days later. Itâ€™s mesmerizing, uplifting and moving, and it tells the story of everything that happened *after* February 14, 2018, with the MSD high school students who started March For Our Lives. The author also wrote Columbine, a book I read a few years ago, and itâ€™s similar with its powerful and clear writing and overall how well done it is. Itâ€™s different in that Columbine focused on the school shooting itself, and Parkland focuses on, as its subtitle suggests, the birth of a movement.I give this book my highest and most wholehearted recommendation â€” and, whether you agree or not with the cause, I think we can all agree that the world would be a better place if we (adults) exhibited a fraction of the courage and determinedness of these kids when it comes to things that matter to us. And for those who do support the cause, I think youâ€™ll probably feel even more committed to it and for sure committed to supporting these kids however possible.

Really well written, Cullen's insight into these young activists gives me hope for the future of our country. It's a great read.

Anybody who has read Columbine by Dave Cullen might expect to find a similar book here, with an extensive background on the killer and the aftermath. Instead, Cullen does something very different. He announced this project in the months after the horrible attack in Parkland. He rushed to have it completed in time for the first anniversary. The killer is distinctively never named. Rather, the story follows a group of teenage activists, and of course, provides a beautiful and moving tribute to the victims of the shootings.Cullenâ€™s book is based on the months he spent with the group formed in response to the attacks, March for Our Lives. His focus is on how they seized control of this tragedyâ€™s narrative and refused to let anybody else take command of their story. They have worked tirelessly to encourage change, an experience which Cullen immerses us in. The long term effects are obviously still to be seen, but this book offers a phenomenal and engaging account of how these teenagers took the major first steps and found hope in a seemingly hopeless situation. We follow the young activists around the country as they reach across social and political aisles to create a positive change.I highly recommend Parkland for anybody looking to read an optimistic and hopeful story that grows from a horrific beginning.

I bought this book for my husband as he is a nut for baseball and he needs challenges to keep his brain stimulated. His doctor recommended puzzles as he has had some brain injuries due to car crashes and as we age it is apparent we do not always remember the things we used to know and my husband is even worse and it frustrates him. The MD suggested that puzzles may open the channels by stimulating his knowledge as he has a master degree and he wants to be active and loves to socialize and talk to others- esp about sports.This book is like DELL Puzzles as it shows EASY to HARD puzzles. However, it seems they are more Hard than Easy overall.I love logic puzzles and I tried an Easy puzzle and it was Hard to me as I got stumped and had to ask for help. I hate sports overall but I was raised on Baseball and Trivia abt baseball - the only sport besides bowling I actually understand!This book will last you for a long long long time and will entertain the whole family as you will need their input. you can make a whole family evening just doing baseball stats and trivia. What a novel idea spending time together!!!

This book.. I'm not yet sure what to say about it. It has some decent information, but if you were to try and use it to make a pair of shoes, I'm not sure you'd have much luck. There's other stuff on the market that I think yields more information, better pictures, and better idea of the overall process than this one. To be fair, I wouldn't say you shouldn't own it. It's interesting to read about the Royal Society, and why they did what they did back then of archiving and talking about each craftsman's process, but ultimately, you couldn't find half the tools they used, and even if you could you might not want to use them for various reasons.Buy it, enjoy reading words from 400 years ago. Don't expect to make a pair of shoes through it.

This is a classic in 18th century shoe making translated by one of the current experts in the filed. This is a treasure for anyone involved in costuming or re-enacting of any sort.

Fantastic book. This book provides excellent information on 18th century shoe making. With no prior knowledge it would certainly be a challenge to create a pair of shoes from this (or any) book but it non the less provides an unparalleled amount of detail and instruction. Includes both the translation and original text as well as illustrations and photographs. The translation is clear and easy to follow though it does contain a certain amount of vocabulary specific to the trade and era.

De Garsault's original eighteenth-century work on shoemaking and shoes found in facsimile here is much enhanced by scholarly notes to the English translation; excerpts on shoes from other historical writings; annotated introductory material on the history of shoemaking; color photographs of tools, materials, and finished shoes with informed annotations to complement the simpler, plainer illustrations of the original work; a glossary of nearly 20 pages; and extensive bibliography and section of suggestions for further reading. One would not know there was so much to shoemaking, as a glance through the glossary with its many technical and some foreign words and terms attests. All of this is in book of the highest production quality with marbled endpages, expert color photographs (as in a museum catalog), and appealing design and format.The purpose of the 1700's publication of the now-classic work was as a documentation and reference on the art and crafts of shoemaking. As a Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau asks in his "Forward" in the original as a way of stating the purpose, "Can not one expect new levels of perfection in the arts when scholars, practiced in their different branches of the physical sciences, take the trouble to study and elucidate the often ingenious operations that the artisan carries out in his workshop?" De Garsault's "Art of the Shoemaker" was an illustrated text and manual meant to preserve and make widely available skills and techniques for making shoes in the decades preceding the Industrial Age when many of these operations would come to be done by machines. The French Royal Academy of Sciences could not have foreseen this; but they recognized that society and industry were changing to meet a growing demand for everyday consumer goods from an increasingly democratic, bourgeois class able to purchase and appreciate these. As du Monceau elsewhere explains, "The academics should further apply themselves to clarifying practice in order to subject a number of delicate operations, which depend entirely on the accuracy of the eye or hand and the success of which are only too often uncertain, to certain rules." Author De Garsault accomplishes this sparing no detail. The "delicate operations" depending on "the accuracy of the eye or hand" were like instructions for the design of shoemaking machines in the coming Industrial Age. The translator's Introduction notes, "Mechanization of shoemaking began in the United States"; although this was not not completed until late in the nineteenth century.The text, illustrations, and Saguto's rich annotations, many of which are like short essays, make for fascinating reading by anyone with an interest in social history, the history of crafts, and in clothing and costume. This "Art of the Shoemaker" is a recent addition to Texas Tech University Press's outstanding and growing series of exceptionally well-illustrated works with content that is both engaging and scholarly relating to what is termed "material culture." Other recent books cover sunbonnets and spurs. Readers and students of social history, consumer goods, manufacturing history, historical crafts, and like topics want to be keeping up with what this publisher is putting out in this field.
