Review
"She wanted humankind to eradicate 'the four evil I's'--ignorance, indifference, intolerance, and injustice. I hope this book will be a testament to her legacy and to her desire that the atrocities of the Holocaust, man's inhumanity toward fellow man, will never be repeated or forgotten." - STEPHEN SCHIFF"After a childhood like this, the choice is revenge or love. Charlene chose love, especially for the impressionable and vulnerable. The message of her example is profound: if this child of the forest can open her heart, what is preventing the rest of us?" - RABBI JACK MOLINE"Charlene Schiff's early years were marked by fear, loss, trauma, and profound insecurity. As an adult, she worked tirelessly to share her personal history with audiences young and old, civilian and military, domestic and international, in an effort to warn others about the consequences of unchecked hate. No one can truly understand what she experienced, but her example of courage, perseverance, and love is something we all can take to heart. She was, and will remain, an inspiration." - DIANE SALTZMAN, Director of Survivor A;ffairs, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

I did not enjoy this book!
This a a fascinating and frightening story of what happened years ago and sadly is still happening today. Charlene’s horrific childhood and exposure to extreme hate and persecution is well told and makes us feel like we are running, hiding, crying and even hoping alongside her. But perhaps the greatest emotion to come out of reading this book is that today we still see children locked in cages, turned back from our borders and returned to Nazi like governments, denied basic medical care, and million go to bed hungry every night. This great book made me wonder - how far have we come in 75 years???
An impactful account of the amazing will to survive against all odds and the power of love and family. The book expanded my understanding with yet another dimension of the holocaust experiences of an amazingly brave and tenacious young girl. Just when I thought I had read enough this book filled me with yet another view. I am grateful.
An incredibly riveting true story of a young girls tenacity to survive. It’s a completely new perspective of the Holocaust and a must read for young adults and adults alike. We can all learn something from Charlene Perlmutter Schiff. I’m in awe.
Read while on vacation. Mind blowing true story of hate, fear, courage, love, and drive beyond anything I could ever imagine. Must read and must never forget this horrific time in our history
great
I couldn't put this book down. The will to survive based on the love of family was powerful. I would recommend reading this book for 5th grade and above.
A gripping account of the horrors of the Holocaust that we cannot forget. I cannot imagine living or rather surviving on the forest.
