I plan to have chicks next Spring. Having this book before hand will be a wonderful tool to make sure I do it right the first time. I appreciate that Kathy never wavers in her advice. The information she provides on her live feeds matches everything in the book. There is no back and forth.The book is easy to read and I recommend it for anyone thinking of getting chickens or who already has them and has been "winging" it.

I have been around chickens all my life. This book is a great review for us "old timers" and certainly if you are new at backyard chicken keeping, GET THIS BOOK! This book, along with The Chicken Chicks blog, FB and website; information is everywhere. Also, Kathy is very good at replying to emails when you just are not sure on something.And...the book smells good. You'll see!

I love this book! Straightforward, sensible, funny -- Kathy makes chicken keeping pretty easy if you follow her guidelines. Everything she has recommended, from her easy peel hard boiled eggs, to her heated cookie tin waterer, has worked perfectly, and that kind of honesty REALLY has meaning for me.If Kathy says it, she's researched it, tried it, and therefore I trust that it will be best for my chickens.I highly recommend this book.

This book is amazing for down to earth, real life, NO NONSENCE, and easy to follow backyard chicken keeping. Love how Kathy sticks with the facts on how to raise and keep your chickens healthy. I am so grateful to have found all of Kathy's very helpful information through Facebook, her website and blog articles. I have used her advice and wealth of information many of times in my first year as a backyard chicken keeper!!! This book is a must have for any chicken keeper!! Pictures are amazing as well!!!

Wow! I have at least a dozen other books about raising backyard chickens, and this by far is the most well written and easy to understand. When the book arrived, I just started to flip through before I had a chance to sit and read, and I found myself stopping and reading through entire chapters, so I stopped what I was doing and stared reading from the beginning.Kathy writes with an ease that makes you feel she's right there with you, answering your questions or helping you with a problem. She covers a wide range of topics that both first time and long-time chicken owners would find informative as well as entertaining.The photography is beautifully done, and the way the book is designed laid out is perfect, especially the "Rachel Recommends" tips boxes.All my other books will now go up to the top shelf to gather dust. This one is going to be loving worn with dog-eared pages.

Kathy has given the reader a concise, well written resource to draw from in planning and preparing to raise backyard chickens. She writes with great clarity and covers every possible scenario one might encounter in the care of enjoying the backyard flock. I have been a follower of The Chicken Chick for a while now. I find her information to be easy to understand and her methods are backed by fact and Vets. Her movies on YouTube and her wise words on her blog have helped me care for my girls and calmed my fears when they acted "off". When I found out she was publishing a book, I pre-ordered it that day! I've read the book from cover to cover and really enjoyed looking at the photos of her chickens.If you are considering becoming a "chicken parent" or already have some feather babies, this book is wonderful.
