Wonderful photos, text and history of these beautiful villas and gardens on Lake Como some of which we have visited.

An enjoyable book to curl up with on winter days, filled with oversize photos of about a dozen lush gardens surrounding venerable villa houses on the banks of Italy's Lake Como. The setting is breathtakingly beautiful -- no wonder people have been building pleasure homes there since Roman Times! Nearly all of the villas in the book seem to be owned by foundations or museums now, and while that means the gardens are immaculately maintained, they do somewhat lack an individual character. The one or two included villas still in private hands have gardens that are slightly run-down, but have a bit more character. I guess it's nice to be able to see both kinds, those maintained to the standard of public botanical gardens and the more authentically atmospheric. The text accompanying each chapter does a good job of relating the basic histories of each villa and garden, although the translation is a bit awkward at times. But altogether a fascinating look at the gardens surrounding these erstwhile getaway homes of the rich -- armchair travel at its best.
