It's also downright funny."―Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion, The Selfish Gene, and The Ancestor's Tale, and emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford"Cooke, founder of the Sloth Appreciation Society, raises the profile of many poorly understood animals, revealing surprising, and often hilarious, truths that are much better than the fictions."―Scientific American"[A] deeply researched, sassily written history of 'the biggest misconceptions, mistakes and myths we've concocted about the animal kingdom,' spread by figures from Aristotle to Walt Disney." ―Nature"Cooke's extensive travels, research and delightful sense of humor make The Truth about Animals a fascinating modern bestiary."―Seattle Times"In the end, the history of zoology reveals as much about our human foibles as about the animals we study. Beautifully written, Lucy Cooke tells the tales of animals and the indignities suffered at the hands of early scientists in their attempt to understand them. I read parts of the book to my 10th grade Biology students and they loved it.
After 14 years as a zoo docent I still didn't appreciate the extent of the camouflage used by sloths to protect themselves. They look, smell, and move like part of the tree they inhabit; but you've gotta read the book to really appreciate the extremes involved. Same things for the other creatures. Truly an eye-opening excursion into the lives of our wild neighbors.
One of the most interesting and informative books I have read in a long time. Extremely well written and enjoyable. I strongly suggest you buy it as I think you will like it.
So fascinating, educational and detailed. The author also captures humor and warmth. I devoured every chapter and will read it again. I can only hope there will be a sequel.
So readable, funny, well written and educational. New York Times book critic Janet Maslin listed this in her article, "17 Refreshing Books to Read This Summer," and she was correct. It is as fun to read as any of the fiction works she recommended. You won't yawn while reading this.
This is a most amazing combination of well researched history of science gone wrong, observational biology and informative narrative of unusual animals. The fact that it is told persistently in a humorous, thought provoking and easily read prose just makes it sensational. The fact that my usual diet of sci-go and thriller casual reading diet rarely gets an even barely positive rating just underscores how extraordinary this book is
Terrifically interesting, informed, and best of all, hilariously funny.
Interesting information, told fairly well, but beginning did drag a bit. While obviously well-researched, sometimes every exact fact becomes burdensome and a synopsis would be mich better.
