What a wonderful book for UU churches! I'm always amazed at how much leadership matters, and with a nonprofit church, you've got the minister, the board, the person managing the finances, trustees, and all the parishioners (and more)...all of whom could easily have differing ideas of what decisions the church should make. The key is the first step: Casting the Vision. That's a nice metaphor to start with, and then the "bowls" are "nested" from that initial step. Nice!The book starts with exercise one, which is for the board to consider the purpose of governance. Following these exercises, the board uses this "owners manual" to ask and answer the questions from the exercises (and ultimately, lay the foundation for their governance practice).This book is terrific, and is written from the perspective of someone who has not only got their Unitarian church up and running without drama, but also, has been hired many times by other UU churches to make sure that their churches are governing correctly. Laura Park of Unity Consulting is amazing.I found this book because I was continually amazed at how well my church, Unity Church in St. Paul, MN, runs so well, without cliques, even though it's quite a large church (800 members?). I love it that the church is not only running without in-fighting, but is "paying it forward" through Unity Consulting, which helps other Unitarian Universalist churches succeed. Everyone needs a road map from mentors--for Unitarian churches who want to thrive, this is the perfect book! A+!
